A little trap to say goodbye to

Why do we need the approval of others? Why do we need to feel validated and why can't we just follow our own creativity and wisdom? (Feb, 8th 2026)

A couple of years ago, I was a runner-up to be a guest on a particular podcast. The last stage before booking the date was a conversation with the host, which I had assumed would be the usual pre-podcast chat to get to know each other as well as the audience.

I was somewhat taken aback when the questions became very personal and moved to realms I never experienced on a pre-podcast call. At the end of it all, the woman provided her last question...

Tell me about your relationship with your mother!!!

Yikes!

I don't know if this is what this woman was referring to, but one of my biggest growth journey have been to let go of the need for validation and approval from my mum. When I was young, every idea I had was carefully put in front of her, and if I got even the smallest hint of disapproval, the idea would be neatly folded away, never to be brought up again.

I'm not really sure she even knew how much her opinion mattered, but it really did, and it was many years before I could finally say that I hear what she's saying but choose to follow my own intuition.

Many of us have been through a similar journey, but nearly all of us still carry the fear of being judged or ridiculed, which has led us to stick to the road most travelled and never open the gate to our own inner creativity, wishes, or wants.

Not sure how this applies to you?
Pause for a moment and think about something you wanted to do or try, and got very excited about. What happened next?
My hunch is that you shared this with someone. If they were excited about it, you allowed yourself to stay excited and move further along in the planning step.
If they weren't all that excited, my hunch is that you got despondent, told yourself they don't understand you or the enormity of the idea, and slowly let it fizzle out. If the idea kept on keeping you up at night, you may have also taken it to its next rightful step...

The trap I am referring to is our need to get other people to agree that what we are thinking of doing is good/right/worthy, and give them so much weight on whether this will see the light of day or not!

What I am proposing is so simple, but also so freeing, and is all about replacing the approval with ... feedback!

Feedback is not about asking someone whether your idea is good enough. It’s about asking questions that help you refine, clarify, or strengthen something you already feel called to explore.

Instead of “Do you think this is a good idea?” we can ask, “What do you think works here?” or “What feels unclear?” or “If this were to succeed, what might it need more of?” These questions invite insight rather than permission.

The difference is subtle but profound. Approval puts our dreams in someone else’s hands. Feedback keeps ownership with us, while still allowing us to learn and grow.
When we stop outsourcing our confidence and start using feedback as information, not validation, we give our ideas room to breathe, evolve, and stand on their own. And sometimes, that’s all they ever needed.

Will you give this a go?

Winter is here in full blow and still I have to teach the HUUMANS when I like to sleep with the covers on, the covers off, on the pillow, next to the pillow, on top of them, next to them, with my backside next to their face, or really, that I am allowed to change my mind, and they don't get to complain about any of it!
Here's a cute picture of me on one of my in-between naps!
