Five Books That Will Shift Your Path Forward

Some books I've recently read or listened to that may inspire you on your own next shift forward

I felt like doing something slightly different today, and thought I'd pause to recommend some fabulous books I've been reading or listening to lately, that I know will resonate with you a lot, too!
So here they are, in no particular order!

Cured, by Dr Jeff Rediger
The Life-Changing Science of Spontaneous Healing explores remarkable cases of people who recovered from chronic or terminal illnesses against all medical expectations. Rediger challenges conventional views on illness, emphasising that true healing goes beyond treating symptoms — it often involves addressing trauma, reclaiming personal power, and aligning with a sense of purpose. The book blends science, spirituality, and inspiring personal stories to offer a hopeful and empowering perspective on what's possible in healing.

Your Soul's Plan by Robert Schwartz
The book explores the idea that we plan our major life challenges — such as illness, loss, and hardship — before we are born, as part of our soul’s growth and evolution. Through sessions with mediums and insights from people who have experienced deep suffering, the book reveals how these challenges often serve a higher purpose, helping us develop qualities like compassion, strength, and self-awareness. It offers a spiritual framework for understanding pain and finding meaning in life’s most difficult experiences

The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks

This book is about identifying and overcoming the internal limits that hold us back from achieving our full potential. Hendricks introduces the concept of the “Upper Limit Problem” — the self-sabotaging behaviours we engage in when things start going well — and guides readers to shift into their “Zone of Genius,” where they can experience lasting success, joy, and fulfilment. The book is a practical and empowering roadmap for breaking through barriers and living a life aligned with your true capabilities.

The Surrender Experiment by Michael Singer

This memoir explores what happens when one person decides to stop resisting life and instead say “yes” to whatever comes his way. Singer shares his journey from a solitary yogic life to unexpectedly becoming a successful entrepreneur and spiritual teacher, all by letting go of personal preferences and trusting the flow of life. The book illustrates how surrendering control can lead to profound personal growth, peace, and unexpected opportunities beyond what the mind could plan

Grow A New Body by Dr Alberto Villoldo

The book presents a holistic program that combines ancient shamanic wisdom with modern science to promote healing and rejuvenation. Villoldo introduces the concept of "One Spirit Medicine," emphasising the interconnectedness of body, mind, and spirit. The book outlines strategies to detoxify the brain and gut using superfoods, harness the body's energy fields for healing, and adopt spiritual practices to address emotional and psychological imbalances. By following this integrative approach, readers are guided toward restoring vitality, preventing illness, and achieving a renewed sense of purpose and connection to life

What Happened To You by Bruce Perry and Oprah Winfrey

The book explores how early childhood trauma shapes the way we think, feel, and behave throughout our lives. Instead of asking, “What’s wrong with you?” the book encourages a more compassionate and insightful question: “What happened to you?” Through a mix of neuroscience, personal stories, and conversations between Perry and Winfrey, the book highlights how trauma affects the brain and offers pathways for healing, resilience, and greater empathy toward ourselves and others.

This week in Healing Conversations...

This week in Healing Conversations, I was joined by Ginger Smith to talk about her remarkable recovery from dementia!

In this episode, host Einav Avni is joined by a truly remarkable guest—Ginger Smith herself, a retired speech language pathologist who, after being diagnosed with dementia and entering hospice care, has experienced an extraordinary recovery.

Marking her 88th birthday and the publication of her new book, Ginger shares her deeply personal journey, recounting the confusion, loss, and near-death experience she faced during her decline, as well as the slow, hopeful climb back to health. Alongside her editor, Shan Lin, Ginger unpacks not only the medical mystery of her case but also the practical steps, hope, and resilience she now advocates for those affected by dementia.

In this powerful conversation, you'll hear about the challenges of misdiagnosis, the sometimes harrowing realities of life in hospice, and what it truly felt like to live inside dementia. Most importantly, Ginger’s story is a message of hope, reminding us that healing, connection, and joy may be possible even in the most unlikely circumstances. Whether you're living with dementia, caring for a loved one, or simply searching for inspiration, this episode offers practical tips, fresh perspectives, and an unwavering sense of possibility.

More about Ginger:

Ginger Smith’s journey into health and healing is anything but conventional. After experiencing a near-death encounter while on a vast array of prescribed medications, Shan witnessed firsthand the shortcomings of a one-size-fits-all approach to medicine. During hospice care, the removal of unnecessary, so-called “curative” medications marked a dramatic turning point—her health began to improve for the first time in years. This remarkable recovery, intertwined with her profound near-death experience, led Shan and her supporters to research the effects of polypharmacy and the benefits of mindful “de-prescribing.” Her story, detailed in her book’s conclusion, offers practical guidance and hope to others navigating similar challenges, encouraging individuals and their loved ones to consider a more individualised and cautious path to wellness.

Dottie's Tip Of The Week

Sometimes I think you people are not using everything you can to make your life so much easier. You bring so many problems and challenges into a life that can really be so simple.
For example... what is worrying you right now? On a scale of 1-10, how important is it? On the same scale, how urgent is it?
And in the bigger scheme of things, how vital is it for you right now?
The secret we dogs have learnt long ago, and which you may not yet have arrived at yet, is that, really, you can simplify your life by at least 90% and find the true happiness you've been looking for...
What's truly matter? Food on your table, someone to pat you, and a ball to run after. Simplify... it's the only way!
