Let go of your mother...
OK, not literally!!
But hear me out...
You know how we keep saying that we're not just human beings having a spiritual experience, but spiritual beings having a human experience?
Well...
What are the chances that the people who drive you nuts the most, including those who are toxic, horrible and downright out of order, are here for more than just making your life hell?
I'm not suggesting that people who hurt us are doing us a favour, or that we should be grateful for the things they've put us through. But I do wonder whether some of the people who challenge us most can also become our greatest opportunities for growth.
And yes, I'm including your mother here, too. Mostly because so many of us still hold the belief that she (as a representative of the force that is holding us back) can actually come between the life we are going through and the life we came here to have
What I'd love you to consider is that we arrived here on our own, and will depart on our own. The people we meet along the way are part of our journey, but our journey is ours. They may influence it, challenge it, support it or make it considerably more difficult than we'd like. But they don't have to determine where we end up.
So what the hell do I mean? Why, thank you for asking!
First, let me clarify again that I'm talking about 'your mother', but it could just as easily be your father, your next-door neighbour, a teacher, an ex-partner, or anyone else who has wronged you and whose words or actions you're still carrying around with you.
Now, let's assume for a moment that none of us is here by accident, and that we have, in some way, chosen to come down here to experience this human thing our spirit friends kept talking about.
Even if you don't believe in reincarnation or soul journeys, stay with me. I promise there's something useful to take from this.
Before we come down here, let's imagine that we choose a path to guide us through this earthly life. For some, it's about learning to love. For others, it's about overcoming physical challenges. For some, it's about discovering who they are, even when everyone around them seems to suggest they can't be that person. Let's say your thing is poetry.
You sit at night and write poem after poem after poem. The few people you've shared them with think they're mind-blowing and encourage you to share them with the world. You want to. You really, really, really want to.
Then, one morning at the breakfast table, you share the idea with your mother. And within minutes, she helps you remember that you're useless, good for nothing, and will never amount to anything. And anyway, who's going to make a living sitting around writing words all day?
There goes your dream.
Or does it?
Here's the interesting part.
If you buy into what I call the 'destroyer energy', you may spend years believing that you can't do what you came here to do because of what your mother said, what she did, or how she made you feel.
You might blame her for your lack of confidence, your missed opportunities, your fear of putting yourself out there, or the fact that you never even tried.
And perhaps you have every reason to feel hurt. Perhaps what she said really did affect you. I'm not suggesting otherwise.
But there's a difference between acknowledging what someone did to you and allowing what they did to continue determining what you do with your life.
And this is where I see the spiritual perspective becoming interesting.
What if, on some level, the people who challenge us are part of the experiences that help us discover our own strength? What if the very thing that made us question ourselves could eventually lead us to understand ourselves better?
Not because their behaviour was right. Not because we needed to be hurt. But because we can take something from our experiences without allowing those experiences to define us forever.
Perhaps the person who made you feel small has inadvertently given you the opportunity to discover that you don't need their approval to feel worthy.
Perhaps the person who told you that you couldn't has allowed you to discover what happens when you try anyway.
And perhaps the person you've been blaming for holding you back isn't the person who gets to decide what happens next.
That's what I mean when I say it's time to LET GO OF YOUR MOTHER.
Not necessarily to forgive her, make peace with her, or even have anything to do with her. You don't have to excuse someone's behaviour or keep them in your life to move forward.
I'm talking about letting go of the belief that they hold the key to your future. That because they made you feel incapable, you are incapable. Because they didn't believe in you, you have no reason to believe in yourself. Because they didn't permit you, you can't go ahead and do what you want to do.
They don't get to decide that.
And neither does the version of you that learnt to believe them.
Of course, it's not always as simple as deciding to stop believing something. These beliefs can run deep, and sometimes we're not even aware of how much they influence our choices. We can know perfectly well, in our thinking minds, that we are capable of doing something, while another part of us is absolutely terrified of trying.
This is where the real work begins. Untangling the fears, beliefs and old stories that have become so familiar that we mistake them for the truth.
And this brings me to something else.
When you've spent years believing that someone else is calling the shots, taking back control can be surprisingly scary. You might have been waiting for their approval, trying to please them, or following a path that made sense to everyone except you.
Suddenly, you're the one who gets to decide.
And what on earth are you supposed to do with that?
Well, my advice is to forget the belief that this is something you should already know how to do.
This is a whole new path, and a whole new journey. One that asks you to explore and feel your way forward, rather than relying entirely on what you already know.
Because if you've spent years following the same thinking patterns, it's unlikely that those very same patterns will show you every possibility that's available to you.
Sometimes, you have to try something different. Take a step without knowing exactly where it will lead. Allow yourself to discover what feels right, rather than waiting until you have every detail worked out.
And this is where the heart comes in.
Not the heart that tells you to ignore logic or abandon common sense, but the part of you that knows what matters to you, what makes you feel alive, and what you've been longing to do despite all the reasons you've given yourself not to.
You don't have to know the whole way forward. You just have to be willing to explore it.
So, perhaps it's time to let go of your mother. Or your father. Or that teacher who made you believe you weren't good enough. Or anyone else you've given the power to decide what you can and cannot do.
Not by pretending they didn't hurt you, but by recognising that your future doesn't have to be a continuation of your past.
And if you find yourself thinking, 'Yes, but...', perhaps that's a good place to start.
Give yourself a little space to explore what sits behind those words. You might discover that what feels like an immovable obstacle is, at least in part, a belief you've been carrying for a very long time.
You don't have to figure it all out today. And you certainly don't have to do it all on your own.
If you'd like some help untangling the fears and beliefs that have been holding you back, give me a shout. This journey is always more interesting with someone by your side.
With love,

Fabienne Louis - Certified Medical intuitive, author & speaker

1) Tell us a little about you and what you do
I’m Fabienne Louis, an author and speaker and a Certified Medical Intuitive, also trained in Qigong and sound healing. I help ambitious professionals who feel stuck in their health, career and relationships see and release the pattern in their way, so they can build the life they want. I wrote Nothing Is Wrong With You: How to Transcend Your Limitations and Live Your Dream Life Now to tell my story and show how I moved past my own limitations and started living my dream life.
2) What led you to do the work you do today?
More than ten years ago, my body broke down. I went through burnout and a health crisis, and the professionals couldn’t find a diagnosis or a solution. My last resort was to listen to my intuition, my inner guidance, and I’m so glad I did. It helped me heal my body quickly, leave a draining 9-5, write my book in three weeks after ten years of it sitting in my head, and build a business doing what I love, without exhaustion, and now I help others do the same.
3) Who do you most love helping, and what might they be experiencing when they find you?
I love helping capable people who have tried so many things to improve their health, their work, their life, and still feel stuck. When I share my story, they recognise themselves, and they begin to understand the patterns and beliefs from past experiences that keep shaping their life and their decisions. Then I help them see those patterns, understand them, and change them, so they can move toward their dreams faster.
4) What do you actually help people with, and how do you work with them?
In my book, I share the Release the Gap Method: the gap between where you are now and where you want to be in your health, money, relationships, or career, and the root cause behind it: the beliefs, fears, and emotions from past experiences that hold you back. I offer self-paced guided audio programs you can do from home, on your own time. Power On is a 15-minute guided audio for when you’re stuck in overthinking and second-guessing, to quiet the noise and choose your next step from clarity, and Overflow goes deeper, releasing the beliefs and fears that keep recreating the same struggle with your money, your time, and your energy.
5) What might someone discover through working with you?
They discover what is actually causing their challenges: beliefs, fears, and emotions from past experiences, running in the background and shaping how they react and decide. They see that nothing is wrong with them, and they learn what to do to release what’s been blocking them from moving toward what they deeply desire.
6) What can someone expect when they choose to work with you?
You can experience a shift in the way you think and decide. You feel less triggered by everyday events and interactions, you understand the thoughts, beliefs, and fears behind your struggles, and you choose what is best for you to move toward your goals faster. That’s what my programs are designed to help you do.

Why do we get so upset about little things people throw our way? Because of the emotions we have attached to them - nothing else.
The people may, or may not, have known how 'hurtful' what they said was, but you do, because here you are, not able to let it go.
Stop giving people so much power over your energy. Even if they meant it, it's not your job to pick it up!!!

![]() | One thing I am slowly learning about myself is that I am fiercely independent. My HUUMANS might say 'stubborn', but ... potato potato... as you say... For example, we might go for a walk, or even when inside, you might say 'come', and I won't, because I also don't like following orders. But another thing I've discovered about myself is that I love being taken care of, so snuggle me up in anything lush and let me rest in your lap, and all is forgotten, until you tell me to do anything, and I snap back to my old self. I can be both independent and still know how to surrender. Don't judge me! (But do take a leaf out of my book! |
