If you're feeling stuck, unmotivated or miserable, here's a concept that may help you shift yourself into a life of alignment and flow
Probably one of the most annoying things when you are having an argument with someone is when they start using the big words: 'always' and its cousin 'never' 🤬
It's like in one swift swoosh, they really do believe things to be so black and white - you either never took out the trash, or you always do! Argh!! 😂
This all-or-nothing mindset can leave us feeling trapped, burned out, frustrated, and miserable, and today I thought it would be nice to discuss something that some of you are familiar with, while others may not be...
Drum roll... 🥁🥁🥁
Life audits!
Life audits, as the name so brilliantly suggests, are the decision and opportunity to pause and reflect on life as you currently know it.
Of course, you can briefly think about all this as you're sitting stuck in traffic, or you could make an actual date for it (by yourself, with your partner or with the whole family). If you're making a date out of it, please remember the number one rule, which is kindness. This is not an invitation to get into one, but to take a look at what is currently there, and what could work even better.
Four aspects of life audits:
1. Reflection: Looking honestly at where you are right now in different life areas (health, relationships, career, finances, spirituality, personal growth, etc.).
2. Awareness: Identifying habits, patterns, or beliefs that help you, as well as those holding you back.
3. Clarity: Reconnecting with your values and vision of what you really want.
4. Action Plan: Setting priorities and practical steps to shift what’s out of balance and bring in more of what is in alignment (making sure to be considerate and gentle with everyone around the table!).
Questions you might want to include may be:
- Am I living in alignment with my values?
- What gives me energy, and what drains me?
- Where do I feel fulfilled, and where do I feel stuck?
- What would an 'extraordinary life' look like for me?
Other questions may be:
- Do I feel proud of the person I’m becoming?
- What brings me joy, and how often do I make space for it?
- How does my body feel on a daily basis?
- Am I giving myself enough rest, movement, and nourishment?
- What stressors am I holding onto that I could release?
- Do I feel more energised or depleted by my current lifestyle?
- Do I feel abundant, or am I living from fear/scarcity?
- What financial goals would make me feel secure and free?
- Do I find meaning in what I do?
- What part of my work excites me, and what feels like a burden?
- If money weren’t an issue, what would I choose to do every day?
- Do my relationships uplift and support me, or drain me?
- Are my boundaries clear and respected?
- Do my daily routines support the life I want to create?
- What clutter (physical, emotional, or mental) can I release?
And the big ones:
- If my life stayed exactly the same for the next 5 years, would I feel satisfied?
- What legacy do I want to leave behind?
- What one change would have the biggest positive ripple effect in my life right now?
- Am I living my life fully, or waiting for “someday”?
I know people who take a whole day out to sit together with their whole families to talk about these questions and make changes (small steps) to support a life that is more aligned and feels more nourishing.
The mindset of all-or-nothing rarely works, because we can always start again tomorrow. We can always become who we feel we are truly meant to be, and we can always take steps for a better tomorrow. Not all at once, but by creating and appreciating the journey that will get you there.
In my family, we do a version of this on New Year's Eve, which is a lot of fun, but taking out a whole day to sit and explore and go as deep as you need will help bring in the motivation and inspiration that life is really not about what happened until now, but what you make of it moving forward.
