'Not good enough'? Think again!

Most people believe they are not good enough, but what if we looked at it from a completely different perspective? (July 26th 2026)

Have you ever achieved something you were proud of, only to find yourself moving the goalposts?

You got the promotion... but you still didn't feel good enough.
You lost the weight... but still criticised the person in the mirror.
You earned another qualification... but wondered if someone would eventually discover you weren't as capable as they thought.

If that sounds familiar, you're far from alone.

In fact, research suggests that around 80–85% of people experience feelings of inadequacy or low self-worth at some point in their lives. Feeling "not good enough" is one of the most common human experiences there is.

So I started wondering...
What if we've been looking at "not good enough" from the wrong angle?

Thought ONE:

What if 'not good enough' isn't your problem, but your protection? What if feeling 'not good enough' didn't begin as a belief at all? What if it began as a way of protecting yourself?

For example: If a parent was emotionally unavailable, unpredictable, or highly critical, it can feel safer for a child to conclude that there must be something wrong with them. Because if the fault is with them, they can fix it more easily than it would be to fix the behaviour of the parent. This helps protect a child from the truth that their main carer is not capable of looking after them; ergo, a coping mechanism that is here to protect, rather than a belief we should try and get rid of.

Think back for a moment.
When was the first time you remember feeling that you weren't enough?
Was it after being criticised?
Being compared?
Being ignored?
Trying to earn love through achievement?

Thought TWO:

Many people who identify with the 'not good enough' belief, over time, stop questioning the belief. Instead, they begin building their lives around it.

Perhaps you recognise yourself here:
• You struggle to say no.
• You keep chasing qualifications.
• You feel guilty resting.
• You rarely celebrate your achievements.
• You hold yourself to impossible standards.
• You feel responsible for everyone else's happiness.

What if these aren't personality traits at all?
What if they're survival strategies?

For example:

The perfectionist isn't trying to be perfect: they're trying not to be criticised.
The people pleaser isn't naturally generous: they're trying not to be rejected.
The overachiever isn't obsessed with success: they're hoping achievement will finally make them feel worthy.

People might find themselves adopting these traits in order to not feel 'not good enough', not realising the way to start addressing these beliefs is by acknowledging they are trying to hide behind these behaviours.

Thought THREE:

Many of us unknowingly make a deal with ourselves:
I'll apply for the promotion when I feel good enough.
I'll start the business when I feel confident enough.
I'll speak up when I feel worthy enough.
I'll leave the relationship when I finally believe I deserve better.

For example:

If I truly believed I was enough...
- I'd apply for that job.
- I'd leave the unhealthy relationship.
- I'd start the business.
- I'd finally say no.
- I'd stop asking everyone else's permission.

Suddenly, "not good enough" isn't just painful - It's also protective.

What to do instead?

Instead of asking 'why don't I feel good enough?', ask 'what part of me is benefiting from my belief I am not good enough?' In other words, feeling not good enough keeps you:
- playing small
- avoiding risks
- seeking approval
- staying in familiar situations
- not stepping into your full potential

In other words, what if the voice telling you you're not good enough is actually the younger part of you trying to stop you from being hurt again?

Another powerful question can be (but before you know it, memories of all sorts of pain are going to come flooding in, so proceed with care... ):
'What happened to me that led me to believe this about myself'?

I hope these thoughts help show you that believing you are not good enough doesn't mean you really are not good enough. More likely, a bunch of events that left you deciding it was safer to create a belief that now is at the heart of anything you ever wanted and haven't achieved (yet...).

Perhaps you've spent years trying to prove your worth.
Maybe it's time to stop proving, and start questioning the belief that you ever needed to. Because a belief isn't a fact, It's simply a conclusion you reached at a time when you didn't have all the information.

And every story can be rewritten.

I'd love to tell you that the belief that I'm not good enough is something I've completely left behind. The truth is, it still whispers to me from time to time, especially in my professional life. It's easy to look at numbers, the people I've reached, the impact I've had, and still wonder whether I'm doing enough.
The difference is that today I recognise the voice for what it is. Rather than accepting it as the truth, I pause and ask a different question:

"What would I do today if I already believed I was enough?"

That single question has changed far more than trying to convince myself that I'm confident ever did.

Dottie's Corner

It took me around 3 years to make the old sofa smell so good, and these people went ahead and replaced it!
Not only did they replace it, but they said I can't go on it! I mean, can you believe the cheek!!!
This is me, trying to convince them I should be allowed on, and that my smell can seriously only enhance the sitting experience...
To be honest, the no-sofa rule only lasted one day, so it's back to my bum-smell-baby! (oh dear!!!)

I work extensively with people to help them transform their lives from fears, limitations and compromises, to harmony, alignment and joy, or in other words, helping people find natural healing to mind, body and soul.
