Something just clicked about 'forgiveness'

Why forgiveness is an important ritual in the clearing of your mind and heart in readiness for alignment, happiness and joy (and more)

One story I grew up with was about a boy who, around this time of the year (the day of atonement), went around his neighbourhood asking for forgiveness for his naughty actions all year round.

If you are unfamiliar with the Day of Atonement, this is a day that Jewish people dedicate to asking for forgiveness from other people they may have hurt, and also from God, in case they got out of line. It is said that when you ask for forgiveness, your slate gets wiped clean, and when you accept a request for forgiveness, you literally gain more favour points with the Man Himself...

Back to the story... This boy went around his neighbourhood asking for forgiveness, but was very upset when no one had accepted his 'sorrys'. He went home and told his mum about the situation, and she, in turn, helped him see that he wasn't asking with a pure heart.

For example, he went to the baker and apologised for being naughty, and at the same time put his finger in the flour sack and continued to cause mayhem...

The boy realised that saying sorry wasn't just something you say, but you must really mean it when you ask for forgiveness, and agree with yourself that you really are going to try and do better.

The boy listened quietly and went out again. This time, he asked for forgiveness and also promised he truly learnt that his actions were unkind or even harmful. To his astonishment, each of the people he came back to speak with had accepted his apologies and even gave him big smiles and words of encouragement.

In the place where I grew up, we would go around asking people for forgiveness, but I can't honestly say we followed the newfound integrity of the boy in the story.

Many years have passed since those days, and although I was never religious, I now follow spirituality and kindness philosophies more closely, and this is when I made a connection I never thought about before.

You see, when you feel like your life is a struggle, or that you're feeling particularly stuck, there will be those who recommend that the way to get unstuck is to either ask for forgiveness or send out forgiving vibes yourself.

When you forgive, you clear your slate. When your slate is cleared, your energy no longer has to carry the pain or connection of the past, and you find yourself with sparkling new magic knocking on your door.

Funny thing that.

So there you have it. Asking for forgiveness is always a good idea. It opens up channels of communication and love.
Forgiving people for their actions (or for how you perceived their actions) means you no longer dwell on things that happened a long time ago (or a short time ago - your call), and instead, you are lifted into new possibilities and stronger energies all around.

I recommend trying this. But do this for yourself. With no expectations, just you and yourself. Free yourself from anyone or any action that is weighing you down.

And if you are in this way inclined, then 'may you be signed and sealed in the book of life' (what a cool wish, don't you think?) (basically means, all the best for the new year...)

By the way, I don't know if this was ever mentioned or practised, but in terms of forgiveness, we absolutely ought to include ourselves in this notion. Forgive yourself for what you did when you didn't know better. It's ok. We live to learn. Forgive, ask for forgiveness and let everything else be part of your growth path...

This week in Healing Conversations...

This week in Healing Conversations, I met with Mags Thomson to talk about Emotional Abuse and Storytelling:

In this episode, we are joined by author and storyteller Mags Thomson for an honest exploration of emotional abuse and the transformative power of storytelling.

Mags opens up about her personal journey, beginning with her decision to cut ties with her family, and discusses the subtle, often misunderstood nature of emotional abuse. Together, Einav and Mags explore how the stories we tell ourselves shape our identity, influence our healing, and can ultimately be reframed to support our growth. Mags shares insights from her new book, The Ugly Duckling Diary, offering listeners a glimpse into how retelling and examining our stories can lead to profound realisations and deeper self-compassion.

They discuss the importance of recognising what’s “normal” in our family environments, the courage it takes to set boundaries, and the liberating experience of connecting with others who have walked similar paths.

More about Mags:

I started my entrepreneurial journey in 2013 when I co-founded SwanWaters, a platform for people recovering from emotional abuse. That is when storytelling became an integral part of my work. Through this work, and my own journey through trauma, I became increasingly aware of how the stories we are told in life impact the stories we tell ourselves, about ourselves, the world, our relationships… It all feeds into how we make choices in life. I realised that I was trying to bully myself into success and happiness. That was never going to work, and it had to change!

So, I started learning a new language. A language of self-love, compassion, and optimism, and this is how I changed my personal narrative. The platform has since lost funding, unfortunately, but the content I created around my experiences and healing has resulted in my book ‘The Ugly Duckling Diary’.

A message from the Universe

Dottie's Corner

Here's me, having a jolly good time when the wall separating me from the sneaky foxes outside opened up, giving me the BEST watching spot ever.
As soon as I discovered this window, I just stood there, keeping guard, already planning how I would scare the sneaky fox when he next arrives uninvitingly to the garden.
But...
I only turned my eyes for one second, and the wonderful window was covered up! And then I heard them say the door would probably fall off its hinges if I spotted a fox and decided it needed chasing. Darn it. I was looking forward to trying it!!
