Why your age is not the real culprit in why you don't achieve your dreams... Ouch?
Whenever we speak at home about time and age, my daughters always want to know if I regret not having them earlier.
The honest truth, I tell them, is that I wasn't ready to have them any earlier than I did (I had my eldest when I was 36...). In fact, for most of my life, I was pretty sure I wasn't the parenting type and it was only when I was travelling in Southeast Asia and saw how natural it was for people to have their babies that I could shed some of my fears and inhibitions about this topic.
The question of readiness keeps coming up in my sessions with my clients, most often, it is dressed as 'I am getting older and worry that time is running out on doing the things I really want to do in my life...'.
This is the topic of conversation today, and I want to start by putting it out there - worrying about your age isn't going to bring the flow and creativity or purpose you wish for.
Divine timing means that everything comes to us when we're ready for it. Yes, I could have had my daughters at an earlier age, but I doubt any of us would have the same closeness and friendship we have today.
Divine timing means that we show up with trust that if something is not happening yet, all it really means is that not all the universal elements have come together yet, and forcing them to materialise sooner, will only give us partial results of what we wish for.
For this reason, age is not a fair indication of life and where you are, it is merely an indication of a journey you've been on that is getting you closer to where you want to be.
A client told me - 'I've wasted my life and made too many wrong choices', but the important point is that they are only able to say this from a distance of time because, at the time of going through whatever they've been through, they were not ready to do something else. At that time they had to face an entirely different level of being and doing to where they are now.
Now, as time has passed, they are able to look back and make the judgment of wasted time and regret, but what they fail to see is that they had to go through the rough and tumble in order to stand and be who they are today.
When you want to achieve anything in your life, there is a process you must go through. The first step might be to dream something up, and the next could be to find the courage to make it come true. A lot of people fall by this second step, but even if this is you right now, all you really need is to find what fears and negative conversations are holding you back.
It's easy for us to look at where we are in life right now and to judge ourselves, use harsh words or conclude we are not where we want to be, but it's more beneficial to park the ego that tells you everything is ruined and too late, and instead, start making plans of action, remembering that the fears the negative voice is throwing at you are NOT fortune telling and the negative voice only tried to protect you from things you haven't done yet.
Good intentions, perfect execution, wrong side of the coin!
Regardless of your age, if you want to do or be someone you are not yet, this is the invitation to change how you talk to yourself and examine your beliefs that actually support your fears of being or becoming that version of yourself you are dreaming about.
A lot of the time this is either about creativity or about careers and finances. The regret of not doing more of what truly calls you, the fear you've left it too long or the conclusion that you are now too old to make a change.
Too old, though, is a state of mind... and if you are truly fed up with what's holding you back then you are invited to take a moment to sit with yourself and truly let some answers come back for you. Remember that your negative voice WILL try and interfere by telling you that you are indeed, too old, very bad with money, time, commitments, and that also, according to your life to date, you really are the world biggest looser. Believe me when I tell you, though, this is all a LIE and you are, in fact, unique, talented and awesome!
Questions to ask: For example:
1. What scares me most right now about <this dream>?
2. What am I believing about where I am right now?
3. What am I believing about the possibilities of moving ahead with my dream?
4. Fears aside, what are some steps I can already do to move myself forward?
5. Negative voice aside, what excites me about bringing forward this idea?
6. What would life be like when I've got started?
7. When I think about starting (or changing), what is stronger in me, the fear or the excitement?
8. If I said yes to making a move, what do I now believe about this?
Ask yourself these questions, and others as they come up and write down the answers if you feel this is right.
My hunch is that you will be able to see for yourself that the only thing holding you back is not your age, or your abilities, it's just the repeated conversations you are having with your negative voice, and it is winning...

Earlier in the week I took my younger daughter to visit South Wales, and loved our beach hoping and connection with nature. This beach in the photo is called Southerndown Beach, but for those of you who are Dr Who fans, this is the beach referred to as 'Bad Wolf Bay'. My daughter loves Dr Who, so it was wonderful for us to go visit here. The weather was lovely too (grey and wet - just as we like it!!)
