The spiritual side of stress management

What is it about stress we can't seem to get our head around? Conversation about stress beyond breathing and meditation...

Whenever I speak with new clients, I always tell them about the two voices we have: the Unconscious Mind (soul) and the Conscious Mind, where the Ego (negative voice) resides rent-free.
The Unconscious mind, I tell them, holds the blueprint to their best version - physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually!

As such, it is always trying to steer them in the right direction, knowing this best version is achievable, and not all that far away; in fact, all that is needed is a different set of internal communication! (Learning to listen to their intuition more while also dialling down the negative voice...).

Our bodies know how to heal themselves. When you get a cut, you already know it will annoy the hell out of you for a few days, but then it will all get magically sorted, and you'll most likely forget it was ever there.

Why is it then that the body can heal some ailments faster than others, or some people, yes, while some people not so much? Why is there no one solution we can all tap into and enjoy as we're pleased?

To answer this question, I first must talk about the thing no one really wants to talk about, which is, of course, (and not taking away from other relevant things such as genetics, toxins, environment, etc...) STRESS, and with it, the body, nay, YOUR body's ability to get back to a state of homeostasis.

Let's first get on the same page when we talk about both of these: stress and homeostasis.

1. Homeostasis is your body's way of keeping everything balanced, stable, and functioning properly, no matter what’s going on around you (things like your body constantly adjusts to keep things like:
Temperature (around 37°C)
Blood sugar levels
pH balance
Hydration
Heart rate
Oxygen levels
For instance, when you get too hot, you sweat to cool down, or when your blood sugar drops, your body triggers hunger or releases glucose.

2. Stress is your body's natural response to a perceived threat, challenge, or demand, whether physical, emotional, or mental. It’s how your brain and body react when something feels overwhelming, uncertain or unsafe.
But what happens to our bodies when we're stressed?
The body activates the fight, flight, freeze or fawn response:
- heart rate increases
- muscles tense
- Breathing becomes shallow
- Thoughts may start racing
- Digestion slows
- we may feel anxious, irritable, panicky or shut down

Now that we understand both these important terms, we can go back to that question of why some ailments heal faster than others, and why some people can heal when others don't seem able to?

And the answer now comes to what I've been saying to you for a while now... everything we experience has an emotional root cause. Because when your system is out of whack and finds it difficult to get back to that state of homeostasis (balance), your starting point is no longer that of equilibrium. Your body is working super hard on trying to maintain just a little bit of what you've come to expect, so it has very few resources left to also look after your healing.

When I work with my clients, I always tell them it doesn't really matter what they want to work on first; the subconscious mind will always guide us to clear the layer of energy it is struggling with most. That's why you may come in wanting to release toxins, but we'll spend the first batch realigning your toes...

What we are trying to say is that our bodies really do know how to heal us and keep us in a constant state of balance. But... when we, in turn, keep on bringing in the stress, we cause our bodies to just survive, rather than thrive. This is also why sometimes it takes longer for people to recognise the shift in their physical symptoms, because the body has to start in the layer that makes sense to it.

So, when your body is unable to get into a state of homeostasis, the following might be noted:
1. nervous system dysregulation
2. hormonal imbalance
3. chronic inflammation
4. Dehydration and electrolyte imbalance
5. cellular stress and aging
6. and so much more...

The main problem, I often find, is that we either don't even recognise we are in 'stress' anymore, or we do, but have no idea what to do with it and how to bring calm and balance back into our lives.

Talking of bringing balance back, I imagine we've all heard of the usual ways of breathing, meditations, nature walks, even a cold water bath or shower has been known to surface as a solution to fighting stress.

I want to talk about something slightly different, which you can check in with yourself whenever you feel stressed, out of sorts, or that you're not ready for any of the usual mindfulness methods we mentioned above.

Three things to consider when stressed:
1) What's going on?

Stress can come from anything, big or small, which, as we read above, puts the body into believing it has entered a danger zone. The first question you can ask yourself is - what am I telling myself about this event/situation/period/etc? Am I using words of fear and catastrophe? What am I believing about this situation? Remember that the meaning we attach to events or situations makes them what they are, so when we are able to examine our internal conversation, we are also, potentially, able to change it from negative into curiosity.

2) What am I comparing this to?

I know, even from my own personal experience, that sometimes we have big expectations for things to go one way, only for them to go the complete opposite direction. Add to that, when we thought we had already hit rock bottom, only for things to take an unexpected and unwelcome turn for the worse.
Expectations, attachments and comparisons are the three greatest sins we can use against ourselves, and the best question to ask yourself is - how do I know things should work out in this way and not another? At this time, and in this way? When you ask yourself these questions, you are often reminded that the stress comes from a decision you made that things should always happen the way you wanted them to, and the Universe just happened to know that bigger and better things are meant for you, so really, stop compromising!

3) Am I forcing a square peg into a round hole?

Yes, probably. This is a continuation from step 2 above, but it felt right to make it a point on its own. When you show up with curiosity, you're also opening yourself up to receiving flow, expansion and joy. When you allow things to work for you, when you raise your energy to that of receiving rather than suffering, a lot of magic comes your way.

And just another word on past trauma. We can't change the past, but we can change our future. We can be sad that something happened in the way it did, but we can also find the soul-level reason it did. When we look at it from victimhood, we give our ego a lot of platform to show us that we were hard done by.
When we look at it from soul-lessons level, we can start seeing the positive things that came out of it, and that beyond the pain, we got a chance to be open to a completely new level of things we probably wouldn't be otherwise.

I highly recommend watching or listening to this week's Healing Conversations, where our guest, Julie Ryan, is sharing more about traumas and how they fit in the soul journey we came here to experience.

This week in Healing Conversations...

This week in Healing Conversations, I connected with the fabulous Julie Ryan to talk about all things spirit-related (medical intuition, psychic and more!):

This week, renowned guest Julie Ryan is in the studio for a truly enlightening discussion. Julie Ryan is no ordinary guest—she’s a successful businesswoman and inventor of surgical devices who, after decades in the corporate world, discovered and honed her abilities as a medical intuitive, psychic medium, and teacher of all things “woo woo.”

In this fascinating episode, Julie shares her unique journey from the boardroom to the world of spirit, recounting how a chance encounter with a book led her down the path to developing psychic and intuitive skills that she now teaches to others worldwide. She dives into her approach to medical intuition, revealing what it’s like to “see” inside the human body, communicate with spirit, and facilitate healing from physical, emotional, and spiritual perspectives.

The conversation unfolds into profound topics, exploring why we experience chronic illness, how emotional and past life events leave imprints on our well-being, and how, according to Julie, spirit communicates guidance and support to each of us every day. She also opens up about the mysterious process of death and transition to the afterlife, drawing on experiences from her personal life and her groundbreaking book, "Angelic Attendance."

More about Julie:

Psychic Medium and Medical Intuitive Julie Ryan can sense what medical conditions and illnesses a person has and facilitate energetic healing. She can communicate with spirits both alive and dead. Julie is a “buffet of psychicness™” and can scan animals, access people’s past lives, and she can tell how close to death someone is. Her book Angelic Attendants: What Really Happens As We Transition From This Life Into The Next describes a series of events that involve angels, multitudes of deceased family and friends, the spirits of deceased pets, and countless serendipitous and miraculous moments.
Julie’s Angel Messages® books are picture books that have angels answering kids’ tough questions. Dottie's Corner

On Wednesday, I was tricked into thinking we were going on a lovely car ride, and instead found myself back at the vet, and this time for a full-blown spay operation!!! yikes!
I hated being separated from my HUUMANS and taken into a cold and bright room, but I did like all the extra attention I received afterwards. I also get to sleep downstairs these days, so no stairs for a couple of weeks. Just me and my young HUUMANS having slumber parties each night...

I'll be ok again soon, so watch this space for more shenanigans and mischiefs! I can't wait to be fully back!!
