The words we say to others, but mostly, the words we say to ourselves. Are they for, or against what we're hoping to achieve?
Lisa Nichols, a motivational speaker, tells this story of her swimming days, which I'll be paraphrasing here...
She tells how she used to be on the swimming team, but despite her love of swimming, would always come last in any tournament or competition she'd be taking part in.
One day, she decided enough was enough and went to talk to her grandmother about allowing her to quit the team.
Her grandmother sits her down and tells her that in their family, people don't quit. She tells her about how her ancestors were brought over from Africa as slaves and the hardship they had to endure, and still, they didn't quit.
She tells her 'Winners never quit and quitters never win'.
The next day, there is the national championship and Lisa is told to swim with the 17-18-year-old team instead of her own (15-year-olds) who have already done their race. To make matters worse... her entire family has come to cheer her on...
With the possibility of running away removed from the horizon, Lisa joins the race and keeps saying to herself this new mantra... 'Winners never quit and quitters never win' - again and again and again.
When she gets to the end, she looks around her and there is no one to be found. Her first thought is that the rest of the competitors have finished the race and gone home, but then she sees her coach jumping up and down at the side of the pool.
To cut a long story short... she won the nationals and set a new record for the older age group!
Why am I telling you this story? Because I feel some inspiration is needed in our world. A reminder we can do even the things we believe we can't, and that we should not knock things off before we try them.
I've written 3 different emails this week, all different in theme but turned out to be with the same moral of the story... When you change your inner dialogue, your outcome changes.
If you tell yourself you can't, you won't
If you tell yourself you can, you will
And this is true for anything at all - your relationships, your health, your kids, your diet, your hobbies, your time, your family etc...
The only thing you need to do is to stop telling yourself you don't have a choice. You do. And when you find the choice, you'll know it's not about quitting, but rather, about doing something you've never done before - doing without worrying about failing...
So... will you try?

This week I had the pleasure of chatting with Ginger Smith about 'My Recovery From Dementia'.
In today's episode, join hosts Ginger Smith and einav avni as they share a poignant and uplifting conversation about Ginger's journey with dementia and her remarkable recovery. Ginger, a retired speech-language pathologist, opens up about her initial denial of her diagnosis of Lewy body dementia, her harrowing experiences in a nursing home, and the challenges of adjusting to a new identity as her cognitive abilities improve.
She discusses the crucial role of caregivers, the practice of "fibbing" to navigate the world of dementia, and her use of lucid dreaming to cope with hallucinations. Ginger's story is one of hope, resilience, and the transformative power of empathy and support. So, join us as we explore the depth of human strength and the importance of understanding and compassion in the face of adversity.
More about Ginger:
I'm an 86-year-old woman who had to retire as a speech-language pathologist due to encroaching dementia symptoms ten years ago. I spent two years in a nursing home. On hospice, I incredibly got well and am home. I'm grateful and fulfilled and happy to share my healing experiences as a person who lived with severe dementia and recovered.
