Are You Stuck in Your Head? Here’s How to Break Free

Hyper-vigillent much? Time to practice presence, awareness, and catching your ego telling you lies...

A few years ago, as I was walking down the lunchtime food market near my workplace, a TV crew was talking to the passers-by. As my friend and I approached, the crew stopped me and asked if I had any questions I'd like to pose to TV cooking personality Mary Berry.
Why, yes! I said. I'd love to ask her what alternative she would recommend I use instead of white flour when I was baking for my daughters?
The Crew seemed to think this was an excellent question and instructed me to repeat the question now the cameras were rolling...
Erm...
I asked my question again, this time throwing all grammar and sentence structure into the air.
'Don't worry', they said. Try again. I tried a couple more times, and in the end, they thanked me, and I left to join the queue of one of the food vendors. I can't be 100% sure, but I have a hunch my question ended up on the editing floor of the BBC or it may have been Channel 4...!

The problem for me back then was that I focused solely on how nervous I was to be speaking to the cameras and the millions of people watching me ask my silly little question. I couldn't, for the life of me, take a deep breath and stay in the current moment, where everything was lovely and fun, instead!

So the question is, why do we do this? Why do we connect with these fears of what might happen, that we can't just let the future be in the future and the present be present, and not, actually, be so terrified of possibilities that are less than likely ever even to happen?

Too many of us are 'hyper-vigilant' - that's when we dream up a worst-case scenario and then add to that more and worse possible scenarios, and at no time at all, we are too worried to even try.

The trick is to be aware of the narrative we tell ourselves so that we move it from being automatic and subconscious to being conscious and, therefore, manageable in the sense we can question it and use it to our actual advantage.

The other day, I happened to be wearing one of my late younger brother's t-shirts.
My brother was an incredible driver, and if anyone ever described someone as 'being one' with the car he was driving, you'd know they'd be talking about my brother.
That day, as I was driving home from the school run, there were huge delays as a result of an earlier accident. My mind drifted to a time when my brother was visiting, and we decided to take the kids to a trampoline park. At that time, the school was exactly 3 minutes walk from my house, so I was feeling very nervous about driving so far, let alone with so many kids in the car.

My brother just said - I'm here with you. I'll help you make it all ok. And it was. With his guidance and calm, my mind didn't need to go into the worst-case scenario. I was present, in the moment and not only was the journey smooth, but it was also fun, and clearly, memorable.

As I was sitting in that traffic jam, I was channelling my brother's seamless confidence and knew that I always have him by my side to show me the way and help me see I've got this.

What I am trying to say is that things are always scarier when they are locked in our imaginations because we can so easily lean into more and more terrible situations and outcomes that are less than desirable. But when we decide to bring in trust and know that 99 out of 100 times, the scary things never happen, and if they do, we do actually know how to get ourselves out of that or what needs to be done. And if we can't, I guess that's just fate, in which case it will happen whether we worry about it or not...

When we are in the moment, we have all the information we need to know what to do. We don't need to worry; we just need to be. So the next time you are all in your head, take a deep breath, smile a silly smile, pull a silly face and ask yourself - if you did <that> what is the worst thing that can actually happen and whether this is actually likely to happen?

Then take another deep breath and remind yourself this fear is really just your negative voice trying to protect you. But as it can't predict the future, you can rest assured it is just telling you exaggerated lies to keep you safe... (and inside your comfort zone... boring, right?)

Dottie's Tip Of The Week

4 steps to doing what I love doing most:
1. Make sure someone is sitting on the sofa
2. Jump up on said sofa and install myself in the exact spot the HUMMAN was sitting
3. Stretch
4. Commence snoozing

I recommend you do the same. You may think you're too busy and have too many things to do, but trust me when I tell you that napping on the sofa IS the most rewarding thing you can do this side of Christmas...
